Claire Calverley – British (Northern)

Claire is a British actor who was born and bred in Huddersfield; she is now based in England’s westcountry. Claire has a Drama degree from Middlesex University, takes weekly TV acting classes with Act Up North and is a Meisner participant at The Cygnet School. Claire is an experienced screen actor who has appeared in numerous films in recent years and notably appeared on television as Mrs Soper in ITVs Doc Martin. Claire is also a popular and busy voiceover artist: she’s the voice of Yeta the gangster in ‘Buba on Netflix and her voice can be heard on Daljit Nagra’s show ‘Xanadu’ on BBC Radio 4.

Claire is very proud of her working class Yorkshire heritage and is passionate about the inclusion of working class perspectives across the entire film and television industry. During the pandemic and with support from Arts Council England and the Theatre Royal, Claire performed and live-streamedGoldCrest’ a one-woman show exploring how birdwatching can improve working class women’s mental health. She has also developed award-winning feminist theatre with the Riot of the Freelance Mind collective. Before becoming an actor, Claire gained a PGCE in Drama from Exeter University and worked for ten years as a teacher in some challenging UK secondary state schools.

Claire is a self-confessed bird nerd and loves listening to birds; she has recorded a vast digital catalogue of birdsong, is an active member of the RSPB and regularly posts social media content under the hashtag #birdheard – a series of videos that encourages people to identify and enjoy birdsong wherever they are: in cities, towns or rural villages.

Claire has also been speaking French for over 30 years and has lived and worked in France.
